How to add Widgets on Android

This document describes how to add Widget to home screen on different versions of Android OS.

Unmodified OS Google

Gingerbread (Android 2.3.x)

  1. Press Menu and touch Add.
Or just touch & hold an empty location on the Home screen.
If there are no empty spots on the Home screen, Add is dimmed; you must delete or move an item before you can add another item, or switch to another Home screen.
  2. In the menu that opens, touch the Widget type.
  3. Selected widget will be added to home screen

Honeycomb (Android 3.x)

  1. Open the Home screen where you want to add the item.

  2. Touch the Customize button at the top-right of the screen.

  3. Touch the category of item you want to add.
If there are no empty spots on the Home screen, Add is dimmed; you must delete or move an item before you can add another item, or switch to another Home screen.

  4. In the menu that opens, touch the tab for the category of item you want to add.
    1. Widgets are miniature apps. Learn about widgets.
If there are more items in the category than can fit on one screen, outlines of additional items appear to the left or right. You can slide the screen left or right to see the additional items.

  5. Drag an item onto the Home screen where you want to add it.

If you pause before lifting your finger, the Home screen enlarges so you can place the item where you want it. Otherwise, it gets placed in the first available spot.

Some items prompt you for more information before they are added to a Home screen. For example, bookmarks prompt you to pick the Browser bookmark you want to add, Contacts shortcuts prompt you to pick the contact you want, and so on.

Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean (Android 4.x)

Widgets are like windows into your apps. They're available from an All Apps tab for you to move onto your Home screens.

To see your widgets:
  1. Touch the All Apps icon   on your Home screen.
  2. Touch Widgets at the top of the screen.

From the main Widgets screen, you can
  • Move between screens: Swipe left or right.
  • Drag a widget to a Home screen: Touch and hold the widget's icon, slide your finger where you want to place it, and lift your finger.

You may be asked to make further choices before the widget activates. If there isn't room where you dropped it, the widget won't get added to the Home screen.

Directions are from manufacturer user manuals and for the latest modification available (12.19.2012).
